A teenager killed after fleeing from a gang of youths was stabbed in the neck, police have said.

Danny O'Shea, 18, was stabbed to death in Gill Avenue, Newham, east London on Friday night after being chased by youths.

Emergency services were called, but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene at 6.50pm.

Scotland Yard said a post mortem examination at Walthamstow Mortuary revealed the cause of death to be a stab wound to the neck.

A spokesman said although formal identification has not yet taken place, officers are satisfied the victim is Mr O'Shea, of Gill Avenue.

Detective Chief Inspector John Macdonald of the Homicide & Serious Crime Command said: "We believe that the victim may have been chased by a group of black males from Butchers Road at the junction of Hooper Road down into Boreham Avenue.

"The area would have been quite busy on a Friday evening, and we need anyone who saw anything suspicious to call us."

Tribute groups have already been set up on social networking site Facebook and have attracted support from hundreds of people.
