Jason Kenny and Laura Trott had an outstanding night at the Olympic Velodrome on Tuesday, winning a gold medal each.
The couple, who are engaged to be married, have won five Olympic titles at Rio - which means if the pair were a country they would be 13th in the Olympic medal table.
Kenny now boasts six Olympic golds - equal to Sir Chris Hoy’s cycling record - and Trott four, meaning she is the most decorated British female Olympian in history.
After Kenny won gold in a dramatic keirin event, BBC commentator Chris Boardman suggested he might be asking Trott “what’s for tea?” as the couple hugged.
Boardman, a GB cycling great who won gold in the 1992 Games, said:
“She’s doing the emotion for both of them really, isn’t he? He’s look at her going: what’s for tea?”
The remark could have reflected Kenny being known as laid back, and his low-key personality has meant he is arguably not as well known outside the cycling world as Trott.
In any case, the comment prompted immediate condemnation on social media, and followed the the BBC’s John Inverdale being slapped down by Andy Murray for neglecting that Serena and Venus Williams had won double Olympic titles before him.
