The pair were not present in court for the sentencing
The judge said the pair's behaviour was "sickening and pitiless".
Adebolajo and Adebowale had to be pinned to the ground as Mr Justice Sweeney began sentencing the pair after they brawled with security guards in the dock.
Both were removed from the courtroom and taken to their prison cells after an outburst prompted by comments from the judge that the pair's actions were a "betrayal of Islam". The family of Lee Rigby sobbed as the dramatic scenes unfolded.
The pair were convicted of mowing Lee Rigby down in a car before hacking him to death in front of horrified onlookers near Woolwich barracks in south-east London on May 22 last year.
Adebolajo shouted "Allahu Akbar" while Adebowale shouted "you and America will never be safe," before both were led out of the courtroom.
EDL and BNP supporters held protests outside the court
Earlier, in an impact statement read to the court, Lee Rigby's wife Rebecca said their young son "will grow up and see images of his dad that no son should ever have to endure, and there is nothing I can do to change this."
Adebolajo's lawyer told the court his client had expected to be killed by police and "remains of the view he should be put to death".
Dozens of EDL and BNP supporters gathered outside the central London court on Wednesday, with some stringing up a noose and calling for the restoration of capital punishment.
Adebolajo was pictured wielding a meat cleaver at the murder scene
During their Old Bailey trial last year, Adebowale, from Greenwich, south-east London, offered no evidence in his defence, but Adebolajo, from Romford, Essex, gave a rambling testimony during which he told the jury he loved al Qaeda.
He claimed that they were "soldiers of Allah" and had carried out the sickening killing as revenge for abuse of Muslims abroad.
Lee Rigby was just 25 when he was murdered
They chose Fusilier Rigby, 25, as their victim because he was wearing a Help for Heroes hooded top that day, and they assumed he was a soldier.
After the pair were convicted at the Old Bailey in December, Adebolajo kissed his Koran and raised it into the air as he and his accomplice were led down to the cells.
Fusilier Rigby's family, who were praised for their dignity throughout the trial, welcomed the killers' convictions.
His mother Lyn said: "We are satisfied that justice has been served, but unfortunately no amount of justice will ever bring Lee back."
