Wednesday Addams
Meet this season's unlikely beauty icon. Wednesday was a direct inspiration for the beauty looks at Erdem and Giles but her edgy and understated brand of goth chic made itself known at a gaggle of LFW shows. A flawless matte complexion and pale lips completed the look with heavy brows, and a subtle use of black mascara creates a thoroughly polished goth girl look.
Way To Glow
With bronzer or cream blush used to subtly sculpt and enhance, this naturally glowing and dewy look is enhanced with gold definition on the eyes to create a simple, luminous look that is adapted to suit each model's face. The flawless faced models at Burberry are the envy-inducing poster girls for this trend. And while this approach may not be considered edgy or daring, we think it's proof that pretty makeup doesn't mean dull.
Fierce And Feline
Makeup artists played had fun with the classic '60s feline eyes this season. The lashings of opaque and sharply applied black liner at Moschino Cheap & Chic looked graphic and felt very modern, while the dramatic feline glamazons at Tom Ford and Michael Van Der Ham oozed old school decadence. Whatever way you're going to play it, we advise you start stocking up on the liquid liners and kohls now, as you'll be getting through plenty of them come autumn...
Partied Out
Imagine you're going for a big night out and you've managed to get your makeup just perfect, with not a stroke of blusher or swipe of eye shadow out of place. Now imagine it's the following morning and you've woken up feeling worse for wear, with last night's clothes and makeup still on...This, ladies and gentleman, is what we mean what we say partied out. Lashings of glitter, smudged lips and cried-out mascara just about sum it up. Not tempted to give this trend a go? Try taking Claire Barrow's ethereal approach to the trend: easy on the mascara and liner with a dusting of iridescent powder around the eye that extends out to the cheekbones. Perfect for Glasto.
The New Smoky Eye
We know: there's a smoky eye trend every season. But before you politely yawn and breezily click through, we urge you to take a closer look. Mascara and liner is kept to a minimal, and a dark chocolate shadow, or bronze in some cases, has been subtly applied to create dust-like sculpting that extends outwards and teamed with a nude lip for a finished look that feels thoroughly new.
Masterpieces
From outrageously artful nails at the likes Michael Van Der Ham and Sophia Webster, to Topshop Unique's head-first-in-the-makeup-box sky blue shadow, and the cartoon-like complexions at Vivienne Westwood, the body was treated like an artist's canvas on the Autumn/Winter 2013 runways – and makeup artists applied colour and texture as if they really were artists.
Stained Pouts
This wasn't a big season for lip colour. Those that strayed from the nude and blotted-out colour that dominated most shows did so with caution, favouring subtly stained and matted deep red tones. We loved the effortless impact of the solid claret pouts at Antonio Berardi's show, while the stain effect at Kinder Aggugini was so convincing it seemed entirely plausible that each of the models had necked some red wine before strutting onto the catwalk...
