Lidl has created a bargain box of fruit and veg for people who hate food waste and don’t mind how their food looks.
The discount supermarket has rolled out boxes of 5kg box of vegetables for £1.50 in all stores in England, Wales and Scotland.
They are full of “too good to waste” fruit and veg that is “perfectly good to eat” but has slightly deteriorated, become discoloured or damaged. Lidl said since trialling the boxes in stores in August it had prevented 250 tonnes of food being binned and sold 50,000 boxes.
The boxes will be sold daily until midday, after which point any leftover boxes will be donated to charity.
“The really brilliant thing about this initiative is that, not only is it helping to tackle the highly important challenge of food waste, it’s also helping our customers make even more savings,“CEO Christian Härtnagel said.
It is not the first supermarket to launch a food-waste tackling initiative. Aldi, Asda, Morrisons and Tesco all have ‘wonky veg’ ranges.
