Liverpool have completed the signing of Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea for a fee of around £12m.

The 23-year-old bolsters the Reds' strikeforce after Fabio Borini's injury and the club's failure to sign Clint Dempsey left them with a dearth of options up front.

Sturridge said he was "humbled and happy" to join the Anfield club.

The Manchester City youth graduate said:

"Brendan Rodgers said he sees me here for a long time - and I also see myself here for a long time. I've not signed here to play for a couple of years and then move on.

"I've signed to be here for as long as possible. It's a humongous club - for me, one of the biggest in the world - and to have the fans and world-class players we have here is amazing."

Sturridge joined Chelsea in 2009 and won two FA Cups, a Premier League title and the Champions League but failed to establish himself as a first-teamer.

With Didier Drogba the first-choice striker, Fernando Torres, Juan Mata, Eden Hazard and Oscar were then signed within 18 months to hinder his chances of regular football at Stamford Bridge. He scored 24 times for the Champions League winners in three-and-a-half-years.

In 2011 Sturridge was loaned out to Bolton where he excelled under Owen Coyle's management, hitting eight goals from 12 games.

Capped four times by England, Sturridge scored twice for Great Britain at the London 2012 Olympics however missed the crucial spot-kick in the quarter-final shootout defeat to South Korea.
