Lizzy Yarnold has claimed Great Britain's first gold medal at the Sochi Winter Olympics in the women's skeleton.

Yarnold set a track record of 57.91 in her third run and held her nerve in the fourth.

Yarnold claimed Team GB's 10th ever Winter Olympic gold

The 25-year-old follows in the footsteps of 2010 British winner Amy Williams, who was at the Sanki Sliding Centre.

Britain now boast two medals from the Winter Games, after Jenny Jones' received a bronze medal in the slopestyle snowboarding.

Yarnold, a school heptathlete, attended a Girls4Gold initiative, which is designed to harness women with the potential to compete at the Olympics.

Sevenoaks-born Yarnold actually rents a house in Bath from former skeleton champion Williams and was working at an insurance underwriters in London five years ago.

In an attempt to save the £176 to buy a custom-made bag for the runners on her sled, she placed a jar in her employers' kitchen in the hope colleagues would make donations.
