More than 12 million people have taken part so far in the UK-wide arts festival held to celebrate the Olympic Games.

About 9.6 million have taken part in free events, including the Radio 1 Hackney Weekend concerts, up to the end of July.

The figures released today show another 2.5 million people have taken part in paid-for events.

The festival has included a spectacular pyrotechnic display at Windermere in Cumbria and a performance by the 200-strong Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra in the shadow of Stirling Castle which was shown on BBC4.

About 2.9 million people are estimated to have taken part in Martin Creed's All The Bells, which saw bells ring out to mark the official start of London 2012.

Ruth Mackenzie, director of London 2012 Festival and the Cultural Olympiad, said: "We are delighted that so many people across the UK have taken part and have enjoyed London 2012 Festival events in such huge numbers. So far, over nine million free opportunities have been taken up to get involved and we are really happy to have a further five million free opportunities still to come, and many more exciting events to attract audiences."

The festival runs up until the final day of the London 2012 Paralympic Games on September 9.
