London 2012: Spain Humbled By Japan In Olympic Opener 1-0 (PICTURES)

GALLERY: Japan Beat Spain

Japan have beaten Spain 1-0 in the first shock of the men's football at the London 2012 Olympics.

Boasting European Championship squad members Jordi Alba, Javier Martínez, Juan Mata and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, world football's dominant force were nevertheless outplayed by their slick opponents.

Yuki Otsu achieved hero status when he slid in to poke the ball past De Gea for the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute at Hampden Park, Glasgow.

Inigo Dominguez was sent off for the Spanish after he hauled down Kensuke Nagai as he bared down on goal just before half-time to compound a miserable opening 45 minutes for one of the event's favourites.

The Japanese were dominant in the second period and should have extended their lead on numerous occasions but failed to close out the game comfortably.

However their historic victory is their first against Spain at any level in football.
