Macaulay Culkin has spoken out in favour of calls for Donald Trump to be digitally removed from Home Alone 2.
In 1992, when Trump was still mostly known as a hotelier rather than being the first US president to be impeached twice, he made a brief cameo in the Home Alone sequel, offering directions to a lost Kevin McCallister.
On Wednesday morning, Macaulay showed his support for a tweet which read: “Petition to digitally replace Trump in Home Alone 2 with 40-year-old Macaulay Culkin.”
The former child star replied simply: “Sold.”
He also applauded another Twitter user, who shared a new cut of Trump’s brief scene, which completely removed the outgoing US president:
Back in November, Home Alone 2 director Chris Columbus claimed that Trump “bullied” his way into the sequel, explaining that a condition for filming in the Plaza hotel was that its then-owner was able to put in an appearance.
Despite initially planning to cut the footage that was filmed, Chris said he was surprised at the positive reaction it got when it was first shown to test audiences.
“People cheered when Trump showed up on-screen,” Chris recalled. “So I said to my editor, ‘Leave him in the movie. It’s a moment for the audience’.”
“But he did bully his way into the movie,” Chris added.
Trump actually has a long list of TV and film cameos to his name, recorded years before he even made the bid to become president.
This includes cameos in Sex And The City, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air and the oft-forgotten film Ghosts Can’t Do It, for which he was awarded a Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor.
