The parents of missing Madeleine McCann are reportedly 'sickened' by claims made by TV psychic Derek Acorah that she is dead.

The 'medium' says he was sent a message from the spirit world telling him "she's not on this earth any more".

Acorah then went even further with his claims by saying that Madeleine died years ago but will soon be reincarnated.

The Sun reports that a source close to Kate and Gerry said they were 'sickened' by 62-year-old Acorah's claims, branding him a self-publicist, and adding "it's incredibly distasteful and insensitive."

Acorah was spouting his nonsense as he promoted his latest tour - just weeks after the McCanns marked the anniversary of their daughter's disappearance.

He said: "I know her parents are convinced Maddie is alive and I'm really sorry - but the little one has been over in the spirit world for some time.

"I don't think she'll be there long before she reincarnates.

"When children pass over who haven't had full lives I believe they choose the time to come back in the same form again - as another little girl."

He denied that he had set out to offend or upset the McCanns and was surprised that his comments had caused distress: "I was only making those statements to explain why I didn't go to Portugal," he said, "I would hate to offend or upset the McCanns as a parent myself."

Derek has since taken to Twitter to deny 'cashing in' on Madeleine's disappearance, saying: "I totally refute the article that had appeared in a newspaper today. I am not so sad that I have to cash in on somebody else's misery!"

Insensitive or what?
