Armed police officers have shot a man after he was spotted carrying firearms in public.

Essex Police were called to Knights Way, Dunmow, at about 10pm on Tuesday after sightings of a man carrying two weapons.

A force spokesman said: "The man was shot by armed officers. He suffered leg injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment where he currently remains."

The 48-year-old man from Dunmow was arrested in relation to firearms offences, the spokesman added. Two suspected firearms were recovered from the scene.

The incident has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) which has launched an investigation.
