Police have charged a man with the murder of a young university lecturer killed on his way to work.

Mark Loveridge, 37, from Mitcham, was charged on Thursday night with Daniel Young's murder.

He was also charged with causing grievous bodily harm to a 23-year-old man stabbed in the buttocks earlier on the same morning, and will appear via virtual court at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Mr Young, 30, died on January 19 after being stabbed in Kendor Gardens, near Morden tube station.

Mr Young was on his way to the second day of a new job at Coventry University's London Campus as a teaching fellow in tourism and hospitality when he was attacked.

The police were called at 8.07am and he was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination has confirmed the cause of death to be a stab wound.

At 7.25am that morning a 23-year-old-man was stabbed in the buttocks on Lewis Road, about a mile from where Mr Young was found. He suffered non-life threatening injuries but remains in hospital.

Mr Young's brother paid tribute to his sibling - whose LinkedIn page said he had worked his way up through the hospitality industry before completing a masters degree in international hospitality management - in the days after his death.

He wrote on Facebook: "Just so proud of everything you achieved in your life, places you travelled, friends you made. You are inspirational big bro."

Detectives have been appealing for witnesses since his death and anyone with information is urged to call the incident room on 020 8721 4961 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of wasting police time, and murder, on the day of the attacks, and bailed until early March.

A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder on January 21 and bailed until late February.
