Man Who Denies Raping Keele University Student Due For Trial

A man is due in court accused of raping a student, who took her own life while police investigated the allegation.

Elgan Varney has denied two counts of raping Keele University student Hannah Stubbs and is due to appear for trial at Stoke Crown Court later.

One rape allegation relates to the period from October 1 2014, until December 31 the same year, while the other accusation is for the period between February 1 and February 28 last year.

The 32-year-old of Wye Road, Clayton, Staffordshire, has also denied one count of sexual assault alleged to have taken place on February 27 2015.

The alleged victim, 22-year-old physiotherapy student Ms Stubbs of Salt, near Stone, in Staffordshire, took her own life while a criminal investigation into her complaint was being carried out.
