Higher education deputy minister Mduduzi Manana on Monday tried to justified his violent action after allegedly assaulting a woman at a popular restaurant in Fourways.
Manana admitted the incident took place on the Xolani Gwala's show on Radio 702 on Monday but denied responsibility.
He was charged with assault on Monday after a sound clip made the rounds on social media. Manana has admitted to slapping a woman at Cubana and said he resorted to violence because the victim had called him gay.
ANC spokesperson Zizi Kodwa told Radio 702 he was concerned that the deputy minister had admitted to the incident.
"The ANC condemns this situation, we are disappointed. These actions do not represent the ANC and the reaction itself is homophobic. The fact he has not denied these claims is a concern in itselfHe condemned Manana's actions."

Eyewitness Lumko Jimlongo told EWN that he tried in vain to stop Manana from assaulting Duma.
'You can't be doing this. I don't care what the woman may or may not have done," Jimlongo told Manana.
'He claimed that Manana's response was: "who do you think you are and what do you think you can do to me?'.
Kodwa said the ANC was trying to locate Manana but could not find him.
He was scheduled to be in Cape Town ahead of the vote of no confidence.
