After extreme weight loss, it's not unusual for a person to have excess skin. And Paul Mason lost more weight than most people could ever imagine.

At 70 stone (980 pounds), Mason was formerly known as "the world's fattest man".

That was until five years ago, when he lost 46 stone (650 pounds) after having gastric bypass surgery.

Losing so much weight made Mason almost unrecognisable, but there was one thing left to do before he could consider his transformation complete.

On Tuesday, the 54-year-old Brit had surgery to remove his excess skin. He was joined in the operating theatre by New York Times reporter Sarah Lyall, who live-tweeted the whole thing.

Mason reportedly couldn't find a surgeon to remove the skin in England, so moved to Massachusetts. Upon hearing his story, a New York surgeon offered to complete the procedure free of charge.

Lyall told The Huffington Post that approximately 50 pounds of skin were removed during the procedure. The rest of Mason's excess skin will be removed in subsequent surgeries.

After after nine and a half hours of surgery, Mason is reportedly resting up and doing well.

Check out some of Lyall's tweets below, but be warned, they are not for the faint-hearted.
