Far-right French presidential hopeful Marine Le Pen has hit out at Theresa May for inviting her main rival Emmanuel Macron for talks at Downing Street, describing him as "the opposite of what Brexit stands for".

The highly controversial National Front leader, who has been forced to deny her party is racist, said Mr Macron supports mass immigration and open borders and so she found it "difficult to understand" Mrs May's apparent support for him.

The liberal, independent Mr Macron met Mrs May for talks last month and afterwards accused Ms Le Pen of trying to "push France into the 19th century" and said her plan to leave the EU would "kill" the economy and harm middle-class interests.

Ms Le Pen spoke in an interview with former Ukip leader Nigel Farage, telling LBC radio: "I find it difficult to understand the consistency of the ideas and convictions in this approach of hers because Mr Macron is of course, the key salesperson of globalisation.

"He is for everything; deregulation of everything, opening up of borders, mass immigration.

"He went to Algeria and he explained it was necessary to build a bridge, as it were, between Europe and Algeria for even more immigration which is the opposite of what Brexit stands for and the choice made by the British people.

"So I do not understand this discrepancy, this contradiction between what Theresa May stands for because she has decided to be the woman who will implement Brexit, and her meeting with Emmanuel Macron."

Ms Le Pen then said she will "have to meet" Mrs May if she wins the spring presidential election.

Mr Farage, who embarrassed the PM by becoming the first UK politician to meet United States president Donald Trump after his election, then replied: "Well, that's true and actually with Donald Trump, Number 10 wanted nothing to do with Donald Trump whatsoever because they thought he would lose and when you win, if you win then that would certainly change."

Ms Le Pen replied: "She is good at getting it wrong but this is rather reassuring!"

The French presidential candidate reserved some praise for Mrs May and the majority of MPs for "sticking to the will of the people" to deliver Brexit.

Ms Le Pen praised the Government and Parliament for their "remarkable and honourable" acceptance of June's referendum vote to leave the European Union.

But the Prime Minister may not welcome the support from Ms Le Pen, given the long-standing UK Government policy not to engage with her
