Marvel's New Captain America Will Be Black, Following Thor Gender-Swap Bombshell

Marvel Announce Another Huge Character Change

After revealing that Thor will be a woman in their new comics, Marvel have revealed that the new Captain America will be black.

The company made the announcement on Thursday 17 July via Twitter, telling fans that Sam Wilson, also known as The Falcon, will be the new Captain.

The ‘All-New Captain America’ series is being created by Rick Remender and Stuart Immonen and Rick has revealed his plans on Marvel’s website.

“This is it. This is the fireworks factory we’re arriving at, and now everything’s going to blow up and be very pretty and exciting to look at,” he explains. “It leads into an evolution of Steve Rogers’ character that I had very early when I was given the job.

“I’ve been having a lot of fun writing Sam. It’s a completely different attitude. The fact that he’s not a soldier shifts things up a bit. Sam’s not going to be Steve. Steve can be very rigid. That can be kind of joyless at times, whereas Sam is absolutely not that.”

Sam Wilson will have a new suit which incorporates Falcon’s persona while still bearing the Captain America trademarks.

Editor Tom Brevoort has also revealed that plenty more changes will be revealed later this year, stating: “We’re not anywhere near finished.

“Change is one of the watchwords of the Marvel Universe, so there are even more startling surprises to come!”

The change will not affect the Marvel movies, meaning Chris Evans will continue to star as Captain America on the big screen.
