Talented Student To Be 'Driven To Heathrow And Deported', Says Her School

Mauritian student Yashika Bageerathi is being driven to Heathrow and will be deported on Wednesday night, according to a spokesperson for her school.

The 19-year-old's fellow students at Oasis Academy Hadley in north London, where she has been studying, have been waging a battle to keep their friend in the UK.

Wednesday's news is the latest blow for Yashika, who is being kept in an immigration removal centre while the Home Office decide her fate.

The teen fled her native home with her mother and brother in 2012 to escape a relative who had been physically abusing her. Now she has been told she will be deported home alone with just the clothes she was wearing and some small change and forced to leave the rest of her family behind.

Immigration minister James Brokenshire insisted Yashika's deportation must go ahead as her case is "not exceptional", despite a parliamentary committee's appeal for compassion, the Guardian reported.

Due to her age, she is considered an adult and her case is considered separately from her family. Yashika has been predicted A grades in her A-levels and has already been offered places at Russell Group universities.

She previously said: "I'm very frightened because I'm all alone and I have no-one. My life is in danger there, Mauritius is no longer the paradise island that it used to be."

Ms Dawes, headteacher of Oasis Hadley Academy in Enfield, said the teenager was a "law-abiding citizen".

She added: "She's a fantastic student, a role model and she works incredibly hard. She's predicted A grades this summer and has offers from Russell Group universities."

The headteacher praised Ms Bageerathi's selflessness: "She does one-to-one maths tuition in her spare time and she wants to be a maths teacher. She is willing to do anything and on a wider front, she acts an ambassador for the academy."

Model Cara Delevingne has even offered her backing to the student, while Yashika's school has started a campaign which has been signed by more than 175,000 people.
