There's no other red carpet event quite like the Met Gala. Year after year, it can be counted on for providing high fashion, drama and one of the best celebrity guestlists ever. Where else would you see Kim Kardashian and Kate Moss hang out at the same party?
The best thing about it? The dresses. Unlike the Oscars or the BAFTAs, the attendees don't stick to a sensible dress code. Instead, they choose to take risks as they embrace the theme of the night. (Last year's 'PUNK: Chaos to Couture' exhibition meant studs, safety pins and a lot of black eyeliner were everywhere.)
In recent years, the 2011 'Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty' and 2012 'Schiaparelli And Prada: Impossible Conversations' exhibitions have both led to standout style from the A-list.
Then there are those memorable moments from a few years back. Kate Moss arriving in her metallic Marc Jacobs dress and turban at 'The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion' gala in 2009 is just one of them.
This year, the Costume Institute will celebrate the Anglo-American couturier Charles James with its 'Beyond Fashion' exhibition. This means the dresses are likely to be bigger and better than ever, but before we catch a glimpse of them on May 5, let's take a moment to admire the best dressed guests of previous years.
