Could this be the solution to keeping Britain's schoolkids awake during boring lessons? Hmm, perhaps not.

In this example of extreme teaching, children in 19 Chinese primary schools are taught to read while resting their chins on a metal bar.

It may look uncomfortable (and undoubtedly is) but the measures have been introduced with the aim of helping the kids (hmm!) by preventing them becoming short-sighted.

The metal bars have been installed at the schools in the city of Wuhan in central Hubei province to force pupils to sit at a safe distance from their work.

Zhang Jianming, headmaster of one of the schools, said it should help the kids develop good reading habits.

It is estimated that up to one third of people in China are short-sighted.

Experts say it might be caused by students working extremely hard in school and missing out on outdoor light.
