Twitter is trending with the phrase #Mick Hucknall, following reports of the Simply Red’s singer’s death in a jet ski accident in the Turks and Caicos islands.
Shocked fans took to the social network to spread the sad news, until it emerged that the website that published details of Hucknall’s demise had also falsely killed off Jeff Goldblum, Adam Sandler, Owen Wilson and Will Smith's son Jaden Smith. All are still alive.
The rumour is thought to have originated from Global Associated News.
Confusing the issue further, the ginger songster took to twitter to confirm the rumours.
@SimplyRedHQ tweeted "its officail..i'm dead..wow its lovely down here..nice and warm, gr8 parties..lots of rock n roll.."
Despite the hoax, tweeters have taken advantage of the rumour to crack some Simply Red jokes:
@HyperbolicGoat "If Mick Hucknall has died then I put a ten pound bet on that The Sun's next day headline will be 'Simply Dead'."
@euanldavidson There's yr confirmation. He's gone. Mick Hucknall is gone. Not even a Night Nurse can help him now. Someday In My Life I will go, too.
LarneLoudmouth Aidan "Mick Hucknall's not dead he's just holding back the years."
Others were less kind.
