A neighbour of Mick Philpott has told of how he awoke in the middle of the night to try and rescue six children trapped in the blazing house.

Daniel Stevenson raced up the road in just his pyjamas before climbing over the Philpott's caravan into the back garden where he tried unsuccessfully to break into the house.

He said: "There was a lot of smoke, the front door was ablaze – there was fire coming from the front door, from the post box and around the edges."

Jade Philpott, 10, John, nine, Jack, eight, Jessie, six and Jayden, five, died in the blaze at the semi-detached house on Victory Road in Allenton, Derby, in the early hours of 11 May 2012.

Duwayne died two days later in Birmingham Children's Hospital.

Mick Philpott, his wife Mairead and 46-year-old Paul Mosley were found guilty of manslaughter despite initially protesting their innocence.

They will be sentenced on Wednesday.

When asked if he had any suspicions over the parents actions on the night of the fire, Stevenson said: "To be honest at the time I didn't have much time to think I were just going on instinct it was a bit tunnel vision to me."
