Around 500 union members at Middlesex University have said they will strike over jobs cuts and changes to staff terms and conditions aimed at cutting spending costs.

University and College Union (UCU) announced on Wednesday that their members would strike with Unison members on October 4 after an ongoing dispute between the university and staff.

The university is said to be making 300 staff redundant to make around half the savings they need. Staff from UCU and Unison are said to be furious at the proposed cuts.

Arthur Husk, UCU branch chair at Middlesex University, called on vice-chancelleor Michael Driscoll to meet for "urgent" talks to avoid disruptive strike action. Husk said the job losses would have a "devastating effect" on the quality of teaching and the student experience.

"The vice-chancellor needs to get round the table with us and genuinely look at ways to resolve the dispute", he added.

Additionally, the university is refusing to rule out increased workloads for remaining staff who keep their jobs - which UCU says is in breach of nationally- agreed conditions of service.

UCU general secretary Sally Hunt said: "Unless the university is willing to shift its position staff will take the appropriate steps to defend their jobs."

A Middlesex University spokesperson said that it was "disappointing and surprising" that the Unions have decided to take industrial action at this time because they are "continuing to work closely with them to minimise the requirement for compulsory redundancies".
