Domineco Dolce and Stefano Gabbana made the surprise announcement that they are closing down their D&G label, following its final appearance on the Milan Fashion Week runway yesterday.

Minutes after the models did their final walk on the runway a statement was sent out informing recipients that Dolce and Gabbana have taken the decision to shut the (slightly) cheaper D&G label.

D&G, the younger, bling-ier sister to the duo's mainline Dolce & Gabbana marked its demise with a Spring/Summer 2012 collection packed with riotous colour, dazzling scarf prints and plenty of trademark glitz.

Italy's economic difficulties have been cited as a possible reason for the decision, but insiders think it's more likely that the D&G label will be folded to stop confusion between the Dolce & Gabbana and D&G labels, the former often getting abbreviated to D&G. Either way, it's certainly created a sense of unease at Milan Fashion Week.
