Mirror Mirror: Fearne Cotton

Fearne Cotton is a busy lady. As well as presenting her Radio 1 show during the week, she's got her own clothing range for Very.co.uk and a makeup collection for Boots. In February, she gave birth to her first son Rex. We caught up with Cotton to chat desert island dresses, style triumphs and her dream job.

What do you see when you look in the mirror and why?

I see relatively tired mum that definitely needs to put a bit of makeup on pretty quick.

If you were stranded on a desert island with just one dress what would it be and why?

I'd probably have to go for something practical with lots of deep pockets so that I could wonder around and forage for lots of food and things. If you're going to go down in history as someone who lived on a desert island forever, you'd want to be in a classic outfit too.

Everyone needs a good LBD and I've got this Balenciaga one I've had for years. It's the perfect throw on little black dress - unfortunately there are no pockets but if I'm going to go for vanity, I'll have to fashion a palm leaf into a bag and so I can wear my Balenciaga dress on the island.

What did you want to be when you were at school?

I wanted to be an air hostess quite desperately. I wrote a letter to British Airways when I was 7 and asked them to keep me in mind. They wrote a letter back to me and I've still got it at home. They asked me to come in one day when I was a bit older. One of my best mates is an air hostess so she's living the dream for me.

What is your biggest style triumph?

I would say reaching the age of 30 and realising the type of silhouette that suits me. The silhouette is quite overlooked at times - it's more about what's fashionable but I think when you work out what sort of shape looks best on your body, you can have a lot of fun playing around with that. I think I've sussed it out, maybe I'm not there yet.

Something I currently love wearing is a good pair of slacks - ankle skimmers - with a soft mohair jumper with a pair of black flat boots. It's a masculine shape but it's still cute with the jumper.

If you could be any character from film or literature who would you be and why?

Patsy from Ab Fab. Absolutely Fabulous is not only one of the greatest shows ever but Joanna Lumley is my ultimate hero above anyone. I think she is the best actress and I love what she does with her life and campaigns. So - I would quite like to play Patsy and drink champagne necked from the bottle.

Fearne's new make-up collection is available in Boots stores and on Boots.com now.
