Mo Farah And Team GB Heroes Feature In Superstars List

Team GB Superstars List Confirmed

Gold medal-winning Olympians Mo Farah, Katherine Grainger and Jade Jones are to challenge for sporting glory as contestants in a one-off revival of 1970s TV hit Superstars.

Medallists from Team GB are taking part in a BBC1 Christmas special of the show which will also see triathlete brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee going head-to-head once more.

They will aim to be crowned the best male and female all-rounders in the Superstars 2012 programme, to be hosted by Gabby Logan.

Farah was in negotiations to feature two weeks ago

The 16 competitors - who also include boxers Anthony Joshua and Nicola Adams - will tackle eight events.

The show, filmed in Bath, will feature track races over 100m and 800m, archery, javelin, a 50m swim, a kayak race, a cycling hill climb and the challenges in the gym tests.

Superstars was a huge hit when first broadcast in the 1970s and continued into the next decade with occasional revivals over the years. It provided thrills and spills when Kevin Keegan had a nasty crash during a cycling heat, hurdler David Hemery injured his ankle during a fall in the steeplechase, and squash player Jonah Barrington stormed out after his squat thrusts failed to meet the judges' approval.

For this year's Olympic special, swimmer Rebecca Adlington will mentor the athletes in the pool and pundits will include athletes Iwan Thomas and Denise Lewis.

The Brownlee brothers will compete against each other again

Logan - whose footballer father Terry Yorath took part in the show - said it was one of her favourite shows as a child.

"I am thrilled to be hosting this special edition of Superstars. We have an incredible line-up of Olympic heroes. What an opportunity for them to compete against each other across a range of diverse physical challenges," she said.

Gemma Gibbons provided one of London 2012's most poignant moments

Farah has already shown his abilities in TV challenges after competing in ITV1 show The Cube.

He said: "After a hard season it will be nice to compete in a different environment. Some of the events are quite new to me which will make it all the more interesting."

Jonathan Brownlee - who took bronze to his brother's gold at London 2012 - said: "Having Alistair taking part in Superstars as well doesn't faze me. This is not triathlon, there will be no team tactics, but we will be competitive - let the best brother win."
