A major high street chain has topped the government's "name and shame" scheme to employers that fail to pay their staff a minimum wage.
Fashion chain Monsoon Accessorize came 1st out of 115 employers the government listed in its latest round of naming and shaming. Between them the companies owed £389,000 to employers in arrears for failing to pay them the National Minimum Wage (NMW), which now stands at £6.70 an hour.
Owing £104,508 to 1,438 staff, the company was by far the largest company to feature on the list, which spans hairdressing, retail, education, catering and social care.
The top five were:

- 3. Project Security UK Ltd, Doncaster, neglected to pay £23,857.11 to 18 workers
- 4. Carl Keith Salons Ltd, Prescot, neglected to pay £20,535.03 to 5 workers
- 5. Cornwall Glass & Glazing Ltd, trading as Exeter & MacKenzie Glass Centre, Exeter, neglected to pay £14,253.66 to 9 workers
TUC General Secretary Frances O'Grady said the companies named represented "the tip of the iceberg" of the companies underpaying staff.
She said: "I am particularly saddened to see Monsoon Accessorize acting in breach of the law.
"A large firm with thousands of employees has no excuse for not having proper systems in place to ensure staff get their legal wages."
Monsoon Accessorize staff's salary fell below the NMW because the company offered them discounted fashions to wear while they work, the BBC reported.
It raised basic wages after the issue was brought to its attention to avoid a repeat, the broadcaster said.

The company told The Guardian: “Monsoon Accessorize has recently been working with HMRC in a wide-ranging review of its payroll practices in relation to the national minimum wage.
"This review has revealed an historic, unintentional breach of the regulations in respect of its staff discount policies for Monsoon clothing. Monsoon is pleased that this issue has been identified and has already taken prompt action to remedy it.”
Business Minister Nick Boles said: "Employers that fail to pay the minimum wage hurt the living standards of the lowest paid and their families.
"We are determined that everyone who is entitled to the National Minimum Wage receives it.
"Next April we will introduce a new National Living Wage which will mean a £900-a-year pay rise for someone working full time on the minimum wage and we will enforce this equally robustly."
The government revising its naming and shaming scheme was revised in October 2013 to make it simpler to name and shame employers that do not comply with minimum wage rules."
