Police who stopped a motorist in Queensland discovered she was carrying some special cargo with her.

Namely this baby koala hidden in a zip-up canvas bag.

The 50-year-old driver was subsequently arrested on outstanding matters, and produced the baby bear when asked if she had anything to declare.

She told officers from Queensland Police she had found the six-month-old male bear in the road the night before and was caring for it. He appeared to be in good health, if a little dehydrated.

An RSPCA ambulance was called to collect the joey – who is protected under the Nature Conservation Act.

A spokesman said: “He’s been on fluids, but is doing well and will shortly be going out to a carer. He weights 1.5kg and we’ve called him Alfred.”

The RSPCA is urging anyone who finds a koala not to attempt to handle it, but to call the animal emergency hotline on 1300 ANIMAL. Often the animal may have no obvious signs of injury but may have internal injuries that require immediate attention.
