A 30-year-old teacher was shot dead in front of her learners at a school near Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga on Monday, The Sowetan reported.
Kate Chiloane was killed at the Sediba-Sa-Thuto Primary School at about 8am by a man believed to be her husband.
Chiloane was on her way to the classroom when she was shot, Colonel Mtsholi Bhembe told The Sowetan. The man was later found with a bullet wound in his head at his home.
In a statement, Mpumalanga education MEC Reginah Mhaule said the department was monitoring the situation at the school and had made provisions for counselling to be given to learners, educators and family members of those affected.
"We are deeply saddened by this tragic incident and hereby send our condolences to the family of the deceased and those affected by her passing," Mhaule said.
According to News24, the man had asked the school's principal for permission to speak to Chiloane, a Grade 2 teacher. The principal initially refused, but later granted permission when the man said he only needed a few minutes to talk to her.
