A sequel to beloved family comedy ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ is reportedly in the works, 21 years after the original film was released.

It’s believed the sequel would see Robin Williams would reprise his role as Daniel Hillard, a father who disguises himself as a female Scottish nanny so he can have access to his children following his divorce.

According to The Wrap, the film will be directed by Chris Columbus, who helmed the original as well as the first two installments of the ‘Harry Potter’ series.

It's also claimed that David Berenbaum - who wrote the festive favourite ‘Elf’ - will act as writer of the project.

The original ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ film, released in 1993, won two Golden Globe awards, the ‘Best Picture (Musical/Comedy)’ prize and ‘Best Actor (Musical/Comedy)’ for Robin Williams performance.

Robin has previously slammed rumours of a sequel to ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’, saying during an interview on ‘Alan Carr: Chatty Man’ in 2010 that there had been many attempts to write a follow-up but the scripts had never been right.

However last year director Chris Columbus admitted to Huff Post Live that there had been discussions about making a sequel, saying: “The thing that fascinates me about a sequel to Mrs. Doubtfire is with most actors who create an iconic charcter like Mrs. Doubtfire, when you come back and do that character, well, you're twenty years older so, you're not going to look the same.

"The cool thing with Mrs. Doubtfire is there's a character, there's a woman, who is actually going to look exactly as she did in 1993."

'Mrs. Doubtfire' also starred Sally Field and Pierce Brosnan, though it is not yet known if they are on board with the project.
