When Lisa McNeil, 25, went into labour at home on Sunday evening, she phoned her local hospital to let staff know she was on her way in, never imagining what a battle she would have on her hands to actually GET INTO the maternity unit on arrival...
As temperatures plummeted to –4C, Lisa and her family pressed the security buzzer to gain access to the ward at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, Fife, before banging on the door, and even trying to prise the doors open with their fingers.
But it was all to no avail, and Lisa gave birth on the pavement, her frantic mum, Karen Barnes, 48, delivering her 8lb 4oz grandson Jackson into Lisa's cardigan.
Nurses eventually arrived at the door when Lisa's partner Ryan, 27, called the hospital on his mobile phone.
Lisa told The Mirror: "I think it's awful a woman in labour is left to have her child on the pavement in the freezing cold."
A spokesperson for NHS Fife told the paper that midwives had hurried to let Lisa in, but that "the labour was so far advanced the delivery took place at the front door of the hospital."
Poor woman! Can you imagine having to deliver your baby outside in this weather?
