A mum who was expecting to give birth to a 7lb baby has spoken of her astonishment when her newborn weighed in at 13 lbs 13 oz.

Mia Yasmin Garcia seemed determined to give midwives - and her mother - a shock when she was born on December 1.

Not only did she arrive ahead of schedule - her mum Alisha Hernandez had been scheduled to have a Caesarean section on December 4 but went into labour three days early and gave birth via Caesarean later that day.

She was also rather larger than the 7lb baby Alisha and her partner Francisco Garcia were expecting.

Francisco, from Colarado, US, told 9 news that he and the staff at San Luis Valley Hospital were shocked by the number on the scales when they weighed her.

"We thought it was going to be 11 or 12 pounds at the most," Francisco said. "The nurse, she got shocked. She's like come here! Come here! Come here! She's like come here! Run!

"I went and I'm like, what happened? She's like, well check out this! I checked it, and it was 13 pounds and 13 ounces."

Following her birth, Mia was treated for respiratory difficulty and low glucose levels. She's now stable and her family hope to be able to take her home within the next week.

Mia has four older sisters, Britney Gonzalez, Ximena Hernandez, and twins Yulissa and Yuliana Hernandez. None of them came close to Mia's birth weight.

"Not even the twins that I have," said Francisco. "Both together, they weighed 12 pounds. Yea, we got her by surprise."

Alisha and Francisco say their family is now complete.

"We tried our best to get a boy," said Francisco. "We never got it. We're still happy though."
