You might ask what on earth mum Davina Ghassemi was thinking when she sent her 10-year-old son to school dressed as Adolf Hitler?
After rustling up a green military tunic from curtain material and adding a swastika armband, the 43-year-old then inked a little 'tache onto young William's upper lip to complete the Nazi look.
Then she sent him on his way, thinking he looked both smart and, er, appropriately dressed for school's World War Two themed historial costume day.
I mean, who could argue: Hitler WAS one of the key figures of the Second World War, wasn't he? Actually, THE key figure - because it wouldn't have happened without him.
But he's also a rather controversial character - a fact seemingly lost on William's mum.
Not surprisingly, when William arrived at school, he was immediately marched into the cloakrooms by teachers and ordered to lose the garb before he could join classmates - dressed as spies, soldiers, land girls and evacuees - for a ration-style meal.
And then the school called Davina to explain why they didn't think William's Hitler -get-up was appropriate - which made the mum see red.
Tony Hand, the head of Dosthill Primary in Tamworth, Staffs., said: "We thought a pupil dressed as Hitler conveyed completely the wrong idea of what the day was about.
"We think other parents will agree with our decision."
But Davina thought the school's reaction was 'completely over the top'.
She said: "I was angry that William had been treated in this way."
The row came after pupils got a letter asking them to come in war-themed outfits as part of a history study workshop.
It suggested they could dress as soldiers, airmen, land girls or evacuees to attend a mobile war museum that was visiting the school.
The costume day was tagged Fire & Flames and was to include a 'theatrical showcase and interactive workshops'.
Davina, 47, said: "William is history mad. He spends hours reading about the war in the Horrible Histories series.
"When he came home with the workshop letter he said straight away, 'I want to be Hitler'.
"I wasn't sure at first, but William said Hitler was kind of the lead character in the whole war and someone should play him."
Davina, who used materials from her curtain-making business to run up William's costume, said: "The other kids thought he looked great. One dad shouted, 'Look - it's Hitler!' and people laughed.
"I thought no more of it, but within half an hour my mobile rang and I was told William had been taken to the toilets to wash off his moustache."
She added: "He had put a lot of thought into being Hitler and had not done it as a joke. Parents were not told in the letter the kids could only dress up as the goodies. There could have been German soldiers."
Fortunately, William wasn't sent home for his costume and after taking it off he was allowed to tuck into a wartime themed lunch of beef stew and dumplings along with classmates dressed as spies, soldiers and evacuees.
