Detectives investigating the deaths of two middle-aged men whose bodies were found in a back garden have launched a murder inquiry.

Humberside Police named the victims as Daniel Hatfield, 52, and Matthew Higgins, 49, from Hull, and said they had suffered "significant multiple injuries".

Their bodies were found on Friday evening in a garden in May Street, Hull, by a neighbour who a saw a leg coming out from under a duvet, according to reports.

The force said two women aged 27 and 36 and a 38-year-old man have been arrested in connection with the deaths.

A post mortem carried out on Saturday night found the men died after suffering significant multiple injuries.

Detectives are studying CCTV, carrying out house-to-house inquiries and forensics experts are working at the scene.

They also called on the public to help them build up a picture of the two victims' movements in the days before their bodies were found.

Specialist officers were supporting their families.

Detective Superintendent Matt Hutchinson said: "The two victims in this case have sustained serious injuries and police are carrying out a large number of inquiries to establish when they were killed and identify the people responsible.

"We are supporting the victims' families and keeping them informed about developments in the case and what we are doing to identify those responsible.

"We have made three arrests in connection with the murders, however we still need the public's help in piecing together the full circumstances of the men's deaths.

"I would therefore urge anyone with information about the movements of Daniel Hatfield and Matthew Higgins between Monday April 18 and Friday April 22 to call the investigation team.

"We also want to speak to people who know anything about the murders or have information about people attending or leaving 7 May Street in the week prior to the men being discovered."

Mr Hutchinson also wanted to reassure local people.

He said: "It is important to reiterate that these murders are being treated as an isolated incident, however high visibility patrols will continue in the area to provide additional reassurance to the local community."

Anyone with information should call 101.
