Rafael Nadal suffered arguably the greatest shock in Wimbledon history as he was eliminated on the first day of the Championships by world 135 Steve Darcis.
The reigning French Open champion, who has lost just twice this year, was defeated in straight-sets 7-6 7-6 6-4 by the 29-year-old Belgian.
Nadal's setback comes a year after his astonishing second-round loss to Lukas Rosol at SW19.
Two-time champion Nadal has reached five finals but his three eliminations have come in the first and second rounds since his 2005 debut.
Darcis, a semi-finalist at Eastbourne last year, had never beaten a top five ranked player.
He told the BBC: "Nobody was expecting me to win. If you focus on him (Rafa) it's tougher. I focused om myself. I think I did great today."
Nadal struggled for rhythm and appeared to be hampered by the knee injury which sidelined him for seven months after his 2012 Wimbledon exit.
