An angry neighbour who stabbed a new mum in the stomach because her baby 'kept crying' has been jailed for just two years.

Dominic De Souza stormed round to his neighbour's home and stabbed her as soon as she opened the door.

The woman's husband pulled her back into the flat and slammed the door before calling police. They arrived minutes later and arrested the 48-year-old.

Croydon crown court heard that De Souza, from Thorton Heath, south London, had complained about the child crying several times since it was born in October last year,

But in February, he 'lost it' and armed himself with a knife before going round to attack the 29-year-old. She was taken to hospital with minor injuries and discharged later that day.

De Souza later admitted causing actual bodily harm. He was sentenced to two years in prison.

Detective Constable Scott Barefoot said: "This was a vicious and unprovoked attack on a mother in her home with her five-month-old baby present in the room.

"It was only by extraordinarily good luck that her injuries weren't life-threatening."

De Souza was also given a restraining order to stop him contacting the victim or returning to her address.

Detective Constable Barefoot added: "Not only did he try to deny his involvement but the only concern he expressed to us was whether his job would be kept open.

"The sentence will mean a dangerous and violent offender is behind bars and Croydon will be a safer place for this."
