A new mum showed how to make a placenta smoothie on a TV show – and then drank it.

Refreshing? Nourishing? Tasty? Each to their own? Or just rather gross?

OK, it's not for everybody, but new mum Kati wanted to share with viewers her, hmm, exotic recipe because of the health benefits she believes it brings to mum after the ordeal of pushing a baby into the world.

Kati was one of four women to show off some unorthodox birthing methods in Childbirth: All Or Nothing, which was shown on BBC One on Tuesday night.

After welcoming her newborn, she headed for the blender to whiz together her placenta and some more traditional ingredients – you know, berries, banana, coconut, that kind of thing.

She then drank it in batches over the next few days.

But why?

The mum told Metro: "It looks and tastes exactly the same as a normal smoothie.

"It's just to replenish my body of the nutrients it's lost...I thought it was a bit weird when I first heard about it but when I started reading up about why you might do it it becomes much more normal."

Other new mums featured on the show included Lisa, who had a lotus birth (which involves keeping her newborn attached to her via umbilical cord until it drops off naturally); Jo, who intends to have an unassisted birth on her houseboat; and Anna, who's opted instead for an elective Caesarean at a private London hospital.
