Penelope Keith Leads Entertainment Names In New Year Honours List

Penelope Keith has led the entertainment names in the New Year Honours List, after being made a Dame.

The actress - best known for her performances as frightfully well-to-do characters in sitcoms 'To The Manor Born' and 'The Good Life' - has been awarded for her services to the arts and to charity.

'Murder, She Wrote' actress Angela Lansbury also received the same honour in the Diplomatic and Overseas List.

Elsewhere, an OBE was awarded to actress and former 'Loose Woman' Lynda Bellingham, who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

"It has been a long and tough year but this award is just a fantastic way to move forward. I feel honoured and inspired and very grateful," she said.

Writer and broadcaster Sandi Toksvig, also received an OBE, as did opera singer Katherine Jenkins.

"I am incredibly humbled to receive this great honour. To accept such an award after only a decade of service to music and charity comes as a wonderful surprise," she said.

Also honoured on the list was 'Gavin & Stacey' star Ruth Jones received an MBE, which she described as "proper tidy" and a "massive compliment".

'Grand Designs' presenter Kevin McCloud and DJ Pete Tong were also awarded MBEs.

Actor and singer Michael Crawford also picked up a CBE for services to children's charities, describing it as "the most wonderful surprise".
