Nick Grimshaw has revealed he’s working on a new music show, to fill in the gap in the market left by ‘Top Of The Pops’.
After more than 40 years of bringing the biggest chart hits of the moment to the nation, ‘TOTP’ was taken off the air in 2006, with no show ever managing to showcase the week’s best music in quite the same way.
Grimmy has now said he thinks he has a solution though, and is currently “in talks” to front a new ‘TOTP’-style show for the modern age.
He told The Sun: “I’m writing a show with my friend Aimee. We’ve just started writing it. We’re in talks to do a show.
Describing the new project, he added: “It’s what we need so I’m going to make it happen. It’s my mission.”
The Radio 1 DJ was, of course, a part of the biggest music show on TV last year, when he landed a job on the ‘X Factor’ judging panel, alongside Rita Ora, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Simon Cowell.
One of his mentored acts, Che Chesterman, made it through to last year’s live final, though months later Grimmy announced that he wouldn’t be back on the show, claiming at the time: “Doing X Factor and the radio was work all the time.
A ‘Top Of The Pops’ reboot was rumoured to be in the works last year, to be fronted by Dermot O’Leary and Fearne Cotton, though this ultimately never came to fruition.
An annual ‘Top Of The Pops’ special still airs at Christmas.
