Fort Hood Shooter Forcibly Shaved Despite Muslim Faith

Nidal Hasan, the US Army psychiatrist convicted of the Fort Hood shooting, has been forcibly shaved by officials at the Fort Leavenworth Prison where the former Major is serving a sentence on death row.

Hasan, whose rampage killed 13 and left 30 injured, had been growing his beard since the 2009 massacre in line with his Muslim faith.

The beard caused a three-month delay during his court-martial, with the prosecution arguing it contravened Army regulations. Hasan’s lawyers argued that Hasan’s Muslim faith demanded the beard and an appeal overruled a judge’s earlier ruling that Hasan should be clean shaven.

Justin Platt, a spokesman for the US Army, said in a statement on Tuesday that Hasan had recently been shaved, however did not provide any further details.

Reported by ABC News, Hasan's former civilian lawyer John Galligan said on Wednesday that he plans to sue the Army for removing the beard.
