Last year, after eight years at the helm of the ITV singing competition, he was replaced by Olly Murs and Caroline Flack, and he wasn’t shy about throwing a bit of shade as he took to the stage.

Early on in the evening, he made his entrance by joking: “I’ve still got this job… for now.”

But he didn’t leave it there, also sticking the boot into Simon Cowell’s TV talent show once again, as he spoke to various stars who were in attendance that night.

After speaking to various audience member, he crossed over to Tess Daly and the cast of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, commenting that the biggest rival to ‘The X Factor’ was now his “new favourite show”.

Ouch!

The most recent series of ‘X Factor’ had a tough time of it both in terms of reviews and viewing figures, repeatedly losing out to ‘Strictly’ by millions of viewers in the ratings battle.

On two especially embarrassing occasions, ‘X Factor’ didn’t even manage to make it into third place in the ratings battle, falling behind ‘Countryfile’.

Dermot also took part in one of the most bewildering opening numbers we’ve seen at an awards show in some time, which started off with a Bear Grylls-inspired comedy sketch, before giving way to a camp-tastic performance from Gloria Gaynor, who sang her classic hit ‘I Will Survive’.
