Thousands of people have packed out Washington D.C's National Mall to witness the second inauguration of president Barack Obama.
He was officially sworn in on Sunday at a private ceremony in the White House accompanied by wife, Michelle, and daughters, Malia and Sasha.
Monday will see a huge public ceremony to honour the start of Obama's second term in office.
This year's crowds will be far smaller than those of 2009
The day includes two official Inaugural Balls, a National Day of Service and two swearing-in ceremonies.
Despite the large crowds however, the numbers of spectators are far smaller than in 2009 when 1.8m people watched the inauguration of America's first black president.
Four years later and organisers are expecting are far smaller 500,000.
What is responsible for this apparent dramatic drop in support? Obamacare? Gun Control? The perennial rumours he is in fact a Muslim from Kenya?
Well, judging by these pictures it looks far more likely to have a much simpler explanation.
The weather.
Temperatures are hovering around the freezing mark in Washington keeping many people away and in the comfort and warmth of their own homes.
Those brave enough to venture outdoors are arriving well equipped with plenty of extra layers.
