League One Oldham Athletic defeated Liverpool to claim one of the great FA Cup upsets in recent years after a 3-2 win at Boundary Park.

On-loan Manchester City right-back Reece Wabara's header proved to be the winner as Liverpool became the fifth Premier League side of the weekend to be eliminated from a team outside of the top flight.

Matt Smith gave Oldham an early lead only for Luis Suárez to cancel out the opener at Boundary Park.

However moments before the half-time whistle Brad Jones, starting ahead of the rested Pepe Reina in goal for the visitors, spilled a routine cross and the ball was played to Smith who regained the Latics' lead.

Three minutes after the restart Wabara powered in an unstoppable header to double the League One team's lead, prompting Reds manager Brendan Rodgers to throw Steven Gerrard on.

Former Everton striker Jose Baxter passed up a presentable chance when his dink failed to fool the flustered Jones while Robbie Simpson volleyed wide as Oldham attempted to widen the lead.

Matt Smith taps in his second goal

Joe Allen made things interesting when he scored his maiden Liverpool goal via a deflection with ten minutes remaining, before Gerrard thumped the crossbar with a delicate shot as the visitors chased a replay.

However Oldham, semi-finalists in 1994, were not to be denied and fans poured onto the pitch to embrace Paul Dickov's heroic players. For Liverpool, it is the third time they have been eliminated from the FA Cup by a non-Premier League team in five years, after Barnsley and Reading's wins at Anfield in 2008 and 2010.

They will now host Everton in the last 16 in three weeks' time.
