The ‘Heart Skips A Beat’ singer, who replaced Dermot on the ITV talent show alongside Caroline Flack earlier this year, made an unfortunate error on Sunday (15 November) night’s results show when he announced Monica Michael would be leaving the competition, instead of taking the judges’ vote to Deadlock.

When Twitter went into meltdown after the gaffe, Dermot reached out to Olly to assure him that these things happen on live TV.

“Hey @ollyofficial Ahoy my friend. Keep that head up. Happens to us all. X,” he wrote.

“Didn't see the show tonight, but live TV is a tricky old beast at times."

In the wake of the Paris terrorist attacks which killed 132 people, Dermot added: “After this weekend... perhaps some sense of context should prevail.”

“Cheers Derm!!” Olly replied. “Beating myself up about it mate! What a plonker!”

Olly had earlier issued an apology on the social networking site, writing: “I apologise to everyone tonight I made a massive f%#k up at the end. It was so tense!! I'm still learning & hope that never happens again!”

‘The X Factor’ continues on Saturday at 8pm on ITV.
