The Oscars 2013- Fashion and Faux Pas

The Oscars; the one night of the year when under-dressed is definitely not an option. The 85th Academy Awards saw a parade of perfectly preened A-Listers gliding down the red carpet in their Sunday best, and we- mere earthlings- watched on in awe. This year's event certainly lived up to expectations in the 'Best Dressed' category, and -of course- there was a little drama too.

The night undoubtedly belonged to Jennifer Lawrence, who picked up the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook. The 22-year-old looked every inch a leading lady in a blush Dior Couture gown. Lawrence became the face of the brand in conjunction with Raf Simons taking over the house-reins, after John Galliano's controversial exit from the industry. Simons' take on classic, feminine glamour suits 'J Law'-yep I said it- down to a tee and her Oscars gown was the cherry on the top of a very pretty awards season cake.

But, Jennifer kindly took the time to remind us that she is still human, by taking (an admittedly very elegant) tumble as she walked to collect her award. Jen is no stranger to a public faux pas -her dress ripped as she collected her Screen Actors Guild award last month. She laughed it off. To avoid any further embarrassment, Jennifer changed into a fitted silver Calvin Klein Collection dress for the Vanity Fair after party.

Another of the night's big winners was Anne Hathaway, who earned the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Les Misérables. Anne wore a pale pink satin gown by Prada, ditching her usual Valentino alliance. She teamed the simple dress with Tiffany & co diamonds and again got tongues wagging, not necessarily for the right reasons. Gorgeous though the gown was, some chest area structuring set the twittersphere gossiping about Anne's, erm, nipples, being on show. They weren't. It was just the dress. Panic over people. Anyway, she just won an Oscar- I don't think she'll be losing any sleep.

Equally as dressed up were Hathaway's Les Mis co-stars Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne, who both opted for Alexander McQueen creations. Amanda looked lovely in a lilac organza embroidered gown, while her recent on-screen love interest Eddie went for a simple black tuxedo, and some- erm, funky?- velvet slippers. If there was an award for the most well groomed cast, I reckon Les Mis would take home the golden man.

With drama being the colour of the evening, this year we were even treated to a 'who wore it better?' battle of the ball gowns. Well, almost...

Fashion geeks everywhere gasped (I did, anyway) when actresses Sally Field and Hilary Swank appeared to wear the same red Valentino gown. The SAME dress?! The golden rule broken on the golden night, you couldn't have written it better. On closer inspection, however, it seems the dresses weren't identical- just very similar. Field's was from the autumn/winter 2012 collection, while Swank's was spring/summer 2013. Phew.

All in all, the Oscars 2013 was a night of beautiful people, beautiful clothes and some beautifully un-scripted moments. Film stars are actually just people, didn't you know?

Now the fashion world starts thinking about awards season 2014. I'd better get choosing my dress...
