Wedding Guest 'Utterly Gobsmacked' After Being Told £100 Gift 'Not Generous Enough'

How rude.

Being a wedding guest can be expensive business.

After a new outfit, travel costs and overnight accommodation, you're lucky if you've got two pennies to rub together. And then there's the gift.

One wedding attendee was left shocked when her present of £100 wasn't considered "generous enough" by the newlyweds.

Writing on a Mumsnet thread, the disgruntled wedding guest said she had attended a former colleague's wedding and had gifted the happy couple a £100 cheque.

But it was not well-received.

She wrote: "Last night I received an email which opened with a few comments about how glad they were to see everybody and how generous they'd all been.

"[It] then said 'we were surprised that your contribution didn't seem to match the warmth of your good wishes on our big day. In view of your own position, if you wanted to send any adjustment it would be thankfully received'."

The woman, who is known only as 'Puzzledandpissedoff', said she was "utterly gobsmacked" by the response.

She added that she had recently come into inheritance money and believed that was what her ex-colleague was alluding to. But added that this person wasn't even a close friend or family member.

Confused as to how to proceed, she asked fellow Mumsnet users for advice - and all hell broke loose.

'CoraPirbright' wrote: "Have you asked any of the other guests if they have had similar emails? The grabbiness of this is beyond ghastly. What awful, awful people."

While 'eitak22' added: "That is entitled and grabby. It's a gift not an obligation and many people wouldn't have given so much to an ex colleague."

At the end of the thread, 'Puzzledandpissedoff' revealed that she had replied to her former colleague with one simple sentence.

"I assume this was some sort of mistake?"
