Two boys have been remanded in custody after making their first appearance in court charged with the murder of a partially-sighted pensioner who died after being mugged.
Paula Castle, 85, who was registered blind and lived alone, fell to the ground after she was robbed in an alleyway off Oldfield Lane South in Greenford, west London, at 1.50pm on Monday.
She died of head injuries in hospital the following day.
The teenagers, aged 14 and 15, appeared at Uxbridge Youth Court where they were told they would appear at the Old Bailey next Tuesday.
The boys, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have also been charged with two counts of robbery.
Prosecutor Eve Macatonia said one charge related to Mrs Castle's handbag, the contents of which were unknown.
The second charge was the alleged robbery of another woman on Tuesday, when a handbag and £120 cash was stolen.
The teenagers, who spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses, were denied bail by District Judge Deborah Wright.
The younger boy wept and was passed a tissue as he sat in the dock waiting for the proceedings to begin.
