Peep Show is getting the US remake treatment again – but this time there will be one big difference.
Original showrunner Sam Bain has revealed that he’s working on a version of the hit comedy, which will feature two female leads in place of Mark and Jez.
He revealed the news in an editorial penned for The Guardian, writing: “People sometimes ask if I look at my earlier work differently now – whether my shows would have been better if they had been more diverse.
“What would Peep Show have been like with women as the two leads?
“It’s a great question – and it’s one I’ll shortly have the answer to, because there is a script in development for a U.S. Peep Show with two female leads.”
Sam added that comedy writer Karey Dornetto is currently working on the script.
Karey has previously worked on shows including Arrested Development, South Park and Community.
There have already been three attempts to remake Peep Show for a US audience, but none have managed to make it past the pilot stage.
Airing from 2003 to 2015, the original Peep Show made stars of Robert Webb and David Mitchell, while also helping to launch the career of Oscar winner Olivia Colman.
Sam previously discussed how difficult it is to get a remake off the ground, telling Digital Spy: “I think adaptations to America are really hard.
“The exceptions – the ones that work, like The Office – are much more rare, because you’re trying to change a show and keep it the same at the same time, which is quite weird.”
