Peter Shilton, England's most capped international, has been charged with drink-driving.
The 63-year-old was arrested in Manor Road in Colchester on 24 February and was charged with driving with excess alcohol.
Shilton played in three World Cups with England
It is understood Shilton's partner lives in Colchester.
Shilton, who featured 125 times for England in a career spanning 30 years, is expected to appear before Colchester magistrates on 19 March, a police spokesman confirmed.
He played more than 1,000 competitive matches for 11 different clubs including Stoke City, Nottingham Forest, Derby and Southampton, throughout his career.
